MUMBAI: A Jewish rabbi and his family have been taken hostage by gunmen involved in a string of coordinated attacks in Mumbai, India's Jewish
Federation told.
"The name of the place is Chabad house in South Mumbai. I hear commandos are storming the apartment block, which is a four-storey building. A rabbi is in there with his family," Indian Jewish Federation chairman Jonathan Solomon said.
"I don't know the number of gunmen in there. I don't know how many family members are in there," he added.

ReplyDeleteGunfire and explosions were heard from the Taj Mahal, the Oberoi and the Chabad facility.
"It seems that the terrorists commandeered a police vehicle which allowed them easy access to the area of the Chabad house," said a spokesman for the Lubavitch movement in New York, Rabbi Zalman Shmotkin.
Around 10:30 a.m., a woman, a child and an Indian cook were seen being led out of the building by police, said one witness.
The child was identified as Moshe Holtzberg, 2, the son of Rabbi Gavriel Noach Holtzberg, the main representative at Chabad house. The child was unharmed, but his clothes were soaked in blood.
Sandra Samuel,44, the cook who pulled the boy out the building, said she saw Rabbi Holzberg, his wife Rivka and two other unidentified guests lying on the floor, apparently "unconscious.

ReplyDeleteTerrorists Trapped Russians in Oberoi
There are three Russians in Trident Oberoi Hotel, Mumbai, that was attacked by terrorists, RBC news agency reported citing Roman Vorobiev, the attaché of Russia’s Consulate General in Mumbai.
According to Vorobiev, Aeroflot’s two cabin attendants and Russia’s resident Alexander Pakhomov are still in their rooms at Trident Oberoi. “We are trying to evacuate them to the Consulate General, but Indian authorities don’t let them leave the rooms for safety reasons,” Vorobiev specified.
Officials of the Consulate General are near Taj Mahal and Trident. Their purpose is to find the location of other Russians that could have been in the hotels, when the terrorists attacked them.
So far, no victims amid the Russians have been reported. Nine Russians that Rosoboronexport sent to Mumbai have been evacuated from Taj Mahal and are currently in the Mumbai office of Russia’s permanent representation in India. Two tourists of Russia that sought help at the Consulate General are there as well. “Eight members of Aeroflot crew have been evacuated from Trident. They are in the Consulate General,” Vorobiev said.
According to local TV, some 10 to 12 militants control terror-struck Trident Oberoi; their hostages are roughly 100 hotel guests. A bomb is said to have exploded at the hotel.

ReplyDeleteHAS ANYONE SEEN PICTURES OF THE HOSTAGES THAT HAVE BEEN RELEASED FROM THE NARIMAN (CHABAD) HOUSE??? IF SO, PLEASE DESCRIBE WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE..
ReplyDeleteOR CAN ANYONE CONFIRM HOW MANY HOSTAGES WERE REALLY RELEASED FROM THERE?
Thank You,

The photos of the hostages released are on Flickr.com - (search nariman house) they are fuzzy but it is unfortunately clear that Rabbi and Rivkah are not amongst them. The most accurate count of hostages released seems to be seven - that's what the Indian news is reporting.

US citizen Marilyn Ernsteen, who was with her husband Joseph, said they thought the gunfire was fireworks until hotel staff said they should lock themselves in their rooms and turn off the lights.
“I didn’t know what was going on. I was terrified,” she said.
Taking only her passport and purse, she and her husband, who are from Chicago, escaped from their fourth-floor room through smoky hallways and out a fire exit.

I apologize - I believe I may have misheard - they said there are still hostages in the oberoi. I believe they were referring to 10 people who walked free from the Oberoi. It is unknown how many hostages are left in the hotel.

Packet .. I have been trying the number -= it rings but no one answers. Will keep trying. Just wanted to let you know too that the area code indicates that the residence is somewhere in Malad/Marve which is an area far north of the sites of the terror attacks.
ReplyDeleteArshia, I just tried the number - it says its switched off. Is he possibly in transit somewhere? Was he planning to fly out? Or take a train? Cell phones here can go out of range. Also, if he doesn't have roaming enabled on his phone, you maynot be able to reach him if he is out of Bombay
ReplyDeleteThanks Dina, Yes thats a number of a residence in Orlem, Malad. Donno why no ones home.

Sad news from Nariman House. DG of the NSG just said on Times Now that 5 hostages held on 1st, 2nd and 4th floors are no more. The 3rd floor is still being scoured. We are really very sorry and angry about this.
ReplyDeleteis it possible there are any survivors at Chabad House...
ReplyDeleteWe were really sorry to just hear from the news at Times Now that 5 hostages were killed a short while ago at Chabd House in Colaba. Their names have not been released yet and the operation is still going on although it is not known yet if there are more hostages still in Chabd House. However its confirmed by the same TV channel that a small baby boy ( believed to be the rabbi's child) was safely rescued earlier today along with a woman from Chabd House. Sincerely hoping that the woman rescued is Rivka Holtzberg
ReplyDeleteDubbagol Team
the women who escaped with the Rabbi's child Moshe was a nanny and not the rabbi's wife.... still no word on the rabbi and his wife... hope is dim because by the looks of it, the NSG has not mentioned any survivors but have mentioned 5 people have died...we an only keep fingers crossed till we get any more official news. NSG wont say anythign till they get to the last floor left to be occuppied....

ReplyDeleteMr. Tunyon the news channel NDTV has just reported that while the army is combing Chabd House for survivors it is very likely that the rabbi and his wife are among the 5 civilian killed at Chabd House earlier today. We are so sorry for your loss.
ReplyDeleteDubbagol Team
We believe that more shots are being fired at Chabd House as we type this so we should perhaps wait and see
ReplyDelete(keeping fingers crossed hope and prayer can do a lot) despite what Barkha Dutt and NDTV news channel has said about the 5 dead hostages

Dear Friends I have not met yet,
ReplyDeleteYesterday was the worst Thanksgiving Day in my life- until 11:45pm when a total stranger- Rajeshree called me from India to tell me that she had located my sister Stephanie Botvin and Brother-in-Law Adam at a yoga retreat far from Mumbai, where they must have left shortly before the violence happened.
Here is a big thank-you to Rajeshree and all of the people who helped a total stranger in my hour of need. I have learned four lessons from this whole mess: to value my children more (they were in Mumbai to set up a surrogacy baby), to always send an itinerary to family whenever I travel- (domestic or foreign). To take-up yoga, and to always trust in the kindness of strangers.
To all of you who are still looking for loved ones, please do not loose faith. And to all of you wonderful helpers out there, keep up your good work. It is such a huge support to the families.
Namaste,
Andrea Botvin Duchovnays

ReplyDeleteCan you pl. give details of the 2 Omani nationals who have been reported injured???
I am a blogger requesting this info from Oman to connect.
HELP! Appreciated!
Am worried for the 13 year boy reported in CNN's Matthew Chance' report. It said the boy lost his parents, uncle, and cousins. There was no news on if there is someone to care for him. Hope people like him are not neglected.
ReplyDeleteSangeetha, you'll need to get in touch with the Omani Embassy in Mumbai on 009122 284 4938 or 0091284 4877 as consular staff handled the injured nationals who are now back home in Oman.
ReplyDeleteI think NDTV list is not current.
ReplyDeleteIndia Today list of deceased unfortunately looks to include Gaurav Jain, brother of Nivedita Jain who was looking for her brother and had found him injured in hospital.
