Children of Bombay
Last afternoon my friend Rahul and I were killing time as we awaited the opening of a friend's art show in Colaba. We spoke of our hopes for the future, our dreams. I said to him something I've thought about for a few months, maybe a year now: I don't want my children to live here. In this city. Maybe even in this country.
My friend is expecting his first child, and he said to me: My wife and I had this same conversation today. But what do we do. Where do we go?'
Why did we say what we did?
I said it because I see with my eyes and in my work, and so it comes through in my writing: in a city where the young, the able, the educated, do not have a chance, what chance will the the helpless have? Our children, our elderly parents? The animals we love?
And in Bombay, a city which is dying, I said to Rahul: where will my child study? which libraries will he or she go to? I said to him, I wanted to buy your wife a pram. But what roads will you push that pram on, which garden? There are no sidewalks in Bombay anymore. There is no clean air. People stone the dogs I feed outside my house. My neighbours say 'No Muslims.' When I landed in the city last week I thought to myself: This looks like Kabul before curfew.
Government warnings and helplines
RR Patil, state home minister, asked people to stay indoors, to not go into South Bombay in the day. Schools are being advised to stay shut.
Please listen, people. This is not the time to show the spirit of mumbai. You'll get in the ways of the cops.
Also. CNN IBN says blood is needed at JJ Hospital +91 22 23739031 - and St George's Hospital - +91 22 22620240.
The Mumbai Police website has a bunch of emergency numbers here: http://www.mumbaipolice.org/imp_telnfax.htm

Danger days - 2008
These dates and times are the ones where very high rainfall is bad news for the city, because they coincide with the highest tides, which means closed sluice gates and higher chances of flooding, since the rain water has nowhere to go.

More on the flooding in the suburbs
I travelled from Lokhandwala Complex (Andheri) to Prabhadevi and back, and here's the eyewitness report :)
Things are fine from the Century Bazaar signal to Turner Road junction. No flooding whatsoever on both Cadell Road and LJ road.
Intermittent flooding from Turner Road Jn. onward.
Major problem spots (approx. knee-deep or higher):
* Turner Rd. Jn. to Khar Stn. on S. V. Road
* Santacruz bus depot (nr. Milan subway) to Nanavati Hospital
* Vileparle Jn. (near Mithibai College) to Juhu Gully
Minor flooding (Approx calf deep):
* parts of Juhu 10th Road
* Santacruz Police Station (Airplane garden on Linking Road) to Arya Samaj
* Some bylanes in Santacruz between S V Road and Linking Road (North Avenue, West Avenue)
* Indian Oil Nagar Jn. (Andheri West)
* Lokhandwala Circle
* All roads leading to the fomer JVPD circle (Nr. JVPD bus depot). The junction itself was strangely above water.
This is all info as of about 3 hrs. ago. Things are looking better now, and the water's receding.

Mumbai Underwater Again
Amit Varma reports at out sister blog Cloudburst Mumbai:
Television is off where I live in Bandra, but we have electricity and internet. Cell phones are working fine. But the city has come to a complete standstill. All flights into Mumbai are cancelled and flights out from Mumbai are running very late. My cousin is en route to Delhi and her flight took off at 2.30 pm, after a delay of 5 hours.
The rain is back. NDTV reports:
Heavy rainfall in Mumbai has flooded the busy Andheri, Worli, Sion, Kurla, Wadala, Chembur and Borivili areas.
The airport in Mumbai has called off all flight operations, reports on Saturday said.
The showers also crippled transport systems on the ground forcing diversions to avoid flooded roads and disrupted rail services.
The weather office has forecast more rainfall throughout Saturday.
There's more from Rediff and CNN-IBN. Peter Griffin SMSs to inform me that Vashi is waist-deep in water in some places, and there's no electricity, and therefore no access to the internet or television reports. Heavy rain is expected to continue today, and staying indoors is advisable.

High tide days
Days to watch out for this monsoon, with expected level of high tide in metres. The danger level, says the Disaster Management Cell, is 4.60m.
June 15, 12:40 - 4.71m
June 16, 13:38 - 4.71m
June 17, 14:14 - 4.65m
August 2, 14:32 - 4.65
August 30, 13:20 - 4.71m
August 31, 13:56 - 4.66m
September 28, 00.50 - 4.65m
September 29, 01:34 - 4.75
September 30, 02:19 - 4.70m
If there is more than an hour of heavy rain at these times, you can pretty much guarantee floods, since the storm water drains will have the tide rushing in, preventing drainage.
